Floodwater up to three feet deep damaged six homes and several businesses in Tusayan on August 22, 2023

On August 22, 2023, heavy rain sent water up to three feet deep through most of Tusayan, the gateway community outside the Grand Canyon's South Rim. Coconino County estimated that floodwaters seriously damaged about six homes, several businesses and a housing complex, and more than 100 residents and guests were displaced. Debris, cars and construction equipment were swept into the road.

A flood in a town built for visitors hits kitchens, lobbies and storerooms all at once. A restaurant with a flooded line has food to save and nowhere to keep it, and a hotel needs breakfast for guests who cannot leave. A portable refrigerated trailer can be parked above the water line within a day, and a mobile kitchen trailer can serve meals while the building dries out.

State Route 64 closed for hours on August 22, 2023, stranding travelers on both sides of Tusayan

During the August 22, 2023 flood, ADOT closed State Route 64, the south entrance road, and traffic from inside the park was routed east through Cameron. Tourists were stuck on the north side of the highway inside the park and others on the south side, unable to enter. About 70 Grand Canyon Unified School District students sheltered at school until they could go home, and the storm also caused power outages.

A closed highway makes a small town responsible for a lot of strangers at once. Food runs out, deliveries cannot arrive and the power may be off. A generator trailer can keep coolers running at a market or lodge when the lines are down, and a 20ft refrigerated container gives a business with a bigger inventory a place to hold it until the road reopens.

Star Valley is about 128 miles southeast of Tusayan.

Star Valley: On March 21, 2026, a small fire of an acre or two burned near Forest Lakes, east of Payson, and the Forest Lakes Fire District responded. The National Interagency Fire Center called it one of the first blazes of what it expects to be an early, intense fire season, with drought conditions expected to return across Arizona by May.

Tusayan began a drainage master plan in April 2025 to reduce flood risk along the Coconino Wash

Part of Tusayan sits inside a FEMA special flood hazard area along the Coconino Wash, which flooded the town in August 2023. The Coconino County Flood Control District has studied the area, and the Tusayan Drainage Master Plan launched in April 2025 to identify drainage and watershed improvements. Public meetings and council presentations ran from 2025 into February 2026.

Drainage work in a small town is slow and disruptive: trenching, culverts, detours and a crew that eats in the truck. A contractor can bring a mobile kitchen trailer to the site, with a 12ft refrigerated trailer for the food. Crews on a job like that eat on site, so food and cold storage matter.

Grand Canyon's South Rim began extra water conservation on April 11, 2026 after the Transcanyon Waterline broke

Breaks in the 12½-mile Transcanyon Waterline, which carries water to the South Rim, began in mid-March 2026, and the park said no water was being pumped to the rim. Measures starting April 11 included reduced hotel occupancy, dry camping only and a ban on campfires and charcoal barbecues. Tusayan hotels outside the park were not affected.

For Tusayan, a water emergency next door means more guests and more meals. Kitchens that run short of water for dishes can use a dishwashing trailer on site, and a mobile kitchen trailer adds capacity during a rush. A portable refrigerated trailer holds the extra food for the busy weeks.

A flash flood tore through Bright Angel Canyon on August 29, 2026 and washed away bridges near Phantom Ranch

A deadly flash flood on August 29, 2026 swept Bright Angel Canyon, burying the Bright Angel Campground and the Phantom Ranch area in debris. Bridges were washed away, infrastructure was destroyed and evacuations and closures followed. A later report said the flood also washed out a section of the North Kaibab Trail.

Tusayan, at the South Rim, feels it first as cancelled bookings and a pause in visitor traffic. Businesses that stock up for a season suddenly have too much food. A portable refrigerated trailer is useful for holding it until the crowds return, and a 20ft refrigerated trailer is the right size for a larger kitchen or market.

Flooding destroyed the Grand Canyon's main water line in August 2026, with pumping targeted for November 16

The August 2026 flooding destroyed the park's main water line. Officials said they could start pumping water from the Bright Angel Creek intake to a new treatment plant by November 16, and water could reach residents and hotels by Thanksgiving. Hotels inside the park remained closed and water conservation was still required.

Waiting for a water line to be rebuilt is a hard stretch for the businesses around the park. Tusayan restaurants and hotels outside the park were not affected by the water limits and may have to serve more guests. A dishwashing trailer helps a kitchen keep up when water is tight, and a portable refrigerated trailer holds the extra stock.

The SBA opened a temporary recovery center at Tusayan Town Hall in October 2026 for flood-affected businesses

In October 2026, the federal Small Business Administration opened a temporary center in Tusayan to help business owners apply for low-interest disaster loans after the August 29 flooding. Small businesses and private nonprofits that suffered economic losses were eligible, and SBA representatives were scheduled to be at Tusayan Town Hall through the end of October.

A recovery loan is useful, but the first week after a flood is paid for in cash and borrowed equipment. Renting is a faster path than buying for a restaurant or lodge that needs cold storage, a hot meal line or dish capacity for a few weeks. A portable refrigerated trailer and a mobile kitchen trailer can be on site quickly. The rental calculator shows what it costs.

A Grand Canyon tour operator called 2026 its slowest year ever, as wildfire and flooding kept visitors away

Grand Canyon National Park had about 4.9 million visitors in 2024 and 4.4 million in 2025, and 2026 looked lower again. Buck Wild Hummer Tours reported cancellations, restaurants saw few customers, and general manager Stoney Ward called it the slowest year since the company opened. He added that the South Rim remains open and that travelers are misinformed about closures.

A slow season is a food-waste problem for a restaurant that has ordered for a crowd. Frozen and fresh stock can be held rather than thrown out. A portable refrigerated trailer lets a kitchen keep extra inventory without paying for a permanent upgrade, and returns when it is no longer needed. When visitors do come back, the same trailer takes the surge.

The Dragon Bravo Fire burned 145,504 acres and destroyed 114 structures, including the Grand Canyon Lodge

Lightning sparked the Dragon Bravo Fire on July 4, 2025. It smoldered for several days, then grew out of control, and it was not fully contained until September 2025. It burned 145,504 acres on the canyon's other rim and destroyed 114 buildings and structures, including the Grand Canyon Lodge.

Tusayan lives on the same visitor economy as the North Rim, so a fire there shows up in bookings on the South Rim. A lodge or restaurant that suffers a fire needs somewhere to store food, a place to cook and sometimes a way to feed evacuated staff. A mobile kitchen trailer and a portable refrigerated trailer can stand in while a building is rebuilt.

Sources

One year after the Dragon Bravo Fire, the Park Service says rebuilding the North Rim lodge will take several years

A year after the Dragon Bravo Fire, most of the Grand Canyon Lodge area was still blocked off, though some cabins survived. The National Park Service is restoring the land and plans to rebuild the lodge and other structures, which will likely take several years. Jacob Lake Inn served as a fire crew staging area before its staff and guests were evacuated, and its owner called the experience "life changing."

A rebuild this long needs food and cold storage for the workers on the project, and a nearby lodge or restaurant that lost trade needs a way to adapt. Tusayan's businesses know the cycle of waiting. A contractor on a long job can rent a 20ft refrigerated trailer and a mobile kitchen trailer by the month, and a generator trailer powers them where the grid is far away.
