Prescott's World's Oldest Rodeo sold out again for 2026, with visitors from 17 countries
Prescott Frontier Days opened the first week of July 2026 with the rodeo sold out, as it has been for several years, according to former Mayor Greg Mengarelli. Wild horse racing, barrel racing and bull riding fill the arena, a large Fourth of July parade runs through town, and visitors from 17 foreign countries were expected.
A sold-out week means vendors, restaurants and caterers are feeding visitors every day, with deliveries made harder by parade closures. A portable refrigerated trailer at a rodeo-grounds kitchen or a downtown catering base holds the week's stock in one place, and a mobile kitchen trailer takes on prep when a booth outgrows its tent.
Fires
The Goodwin Fire burned 28,516 acres south of Prescott, and the rodeo went on
The Goodwin Fire started June 24, 2017 in the Bradshaw Mountains, about 14 miles south of Prescott, and burned 28,516 acres over 16 days. More than 9,000 people were evacuated, 17 homes were destroyed, and State Route 69 was closed. Organizers said the World's Oldest Rodeo would go on that week.
A wildfire that size sends a lot of people to shelters and relief sites, all of whom need food, ice and cold drinks fast. A 20ft refrigerated trailer at an evacuation center holds donated food, and a mobile kitchen trailer can serve hot meals to evacuees and crews. For a long incident, a generator trailer keeps both running.

A fire on Whiskey Row took out a cafe, a saloon and a food store in one evening
On the evening of May 8, 2012, fire tore through Prescott's Whiskey Row. At least three businesses were destroyed: the Bird Cage Saloon, Pearl's Place Cafe and Prescott Food Store. Fire officials believed it centered toward the rear of The Palace restaurant. Crews took about two hours to bring it under control, with more than 50 people from several agencies on scene.
When a row of kitchens and a food store go at once, a downtown loses its cold storage in one night. Anyone left with product needs somewhere cold immediately. A refrigerated trailer parked on a nearby lot holds it, and a 12ft refrigerated trailer fits where bigger rigs can't turn around on a historic square.
Fires
An illegal firework started a brush fire in Prescott during a heatwave
Just before the Fourth of July in 2023, an illegal firework set off in Prescott started a brush fire during a heatwave with a high wildfire threat, as reported on July 2 that year.
Holiday weeks in Prescott's dry season put fire crews and event staff on alert, and any outdoor food operation has to plan for both heat and a closed road. A refrigerated container or trailer parked at a safe, cleared site gives vendors and caterers a stable place to keep stock. A generator trailer lets that cold storage run without relying on a grid that fire crews may need to shut off.

Prescott Regional Airport opened a $13.9 million terminal with a Douglas fir ceiling
A new passenger terminal at Prescott Regional Airport was dedicated in June 2021 at a cost of $13.9 million. It has a Douglas fir timber ceiling, and the project also overhauled hangars, roads and taxiways, and poured foundations for a future expansion.
Airports are one of the places where food service and construction run side by side. A terminal build brings a large crew and a lot of lunches. Afterward, airline and concession operators have to supply a new space from scratch. A refrigerated container works at a staging yard during the build, and a mobile kitchen can feed crews and opening-day guests without a permanent kitchen.
Construction
Embry-Riddle's Prescott campus is adding a wind tunnel lab and a bigger simulation center
Embry-Riddle's Prescott campus planned a 15,000-square-foot aeronautics center with a 5,600-square-foot wind tunnel lab to replace a tunnel more than 50 years old, plus propulsion and drone labs. A 15,000-square-foot addition to the Robertson Simulation Center will raise capacity from 600 to 1,050 flight students.
Two building projects on one campus means crews on site for more than a year, and students and staff who need to eat on a changing campus. A refrigerated container in the staging area keeps crew water and lunches cold, and a mobile kitchen trailer can serve students or visitors during a ribbon-cutting or open house when the permanent dining options are across a work zone.

Prescott's Christmas City parade sent 35 to 40 lit floats around Courthouse Square
Prescott's Holiday Light Parade on Saturday, November 26, 2022, ran around Courthouse Square in historic downtown, with 35 to 40 illuminated floats, followed by a free bonfire at Mile High Middle School Field. The Prescott Downtown Partnership sponsored the event, billed as the kickoff of the holiday season in Arizona's Christmas City.
A crowd standing downtown in a cold November evening wants hot food and drink, and the restaurants on the square can only seat so many. A mobile kitchen trailer set up beside the bonfire serves a line that a restaurant can't, and a refrigerated trailer behind it holds the cider, milk and everything else that needs to stay cold until it's poured.
Storms and outages
Flash floods hit Prescott Valley on July 20, and the water ran over five feet deep
A monsoon storm dropped about 2.5 inches of rain in an hour on July 20, 2026 on the area north of Prescott Valley. Water reached more than five feet at Roundup and Fulton drives, flooded homes, moved cars and carried four shipping containers across a neighborhood. Central Arizona Fire and Medical Authority handled three water rescues.
Floods like this are a reminder in Prescott that this part of Yavapai County can go from dry to underwater within an hour, and flooded roads cut off deliveries. A restaurant, shop or relief site that gets cut off still has to keep its food cold. A generator trailer and refrigerated trailer on call mean that a few days of closed roads doesn't end in a spoiled walk-in.

The 45th Prescott Bluegrass Festival returned to Courthouse Plaza for free
The 45th annual Prescott Bluegrass Festival was scheduled for June 20 and 21, 2026 at the Yavapai County Courthouse Plaza, 120 S. Cortez St. Admission was free, and the plaza is shaded by elm trees.
A free two-day festival on a plaza in June is a draw for food vendors, and heat is the one thing that elm trees don't fix for a cooler. A portable refrigerated trailer parked at the edge of the closed streets keeps vendors stocked for both days, and a dishwashing trailer is useful for any group serving from reusable ware in a square without a nearby kitchen.
Storms and outages
A month after the Goodwin Fire, burn-scar flooding damaged 109 houses in Mayer
After the Goodwin Fire was contained on July 10, 2017, flash flooding off the burn scar in Mayer on July 19 damaged 109 houses. Mayer and Breezy Pines had been evacuated on June 27, so for many families the fire and the flood came within weeks of each other.
Recovery work after a flood like this runs for months. Volunteers, relief crews and contractors need food, and donated groceries need to stay cold in July. A refrigerated trailer at a staging point in town holds relief supplies, and a mobile kitchen can feed a cleanup crew without sending a truck to a restaurant across the county.
