Fires
The Jones Fire closed US 60 and sent a Wickenburg daycare to the community center on May 11, 2026
A brush fire near the Hassayampa River grew to about 84 acres on May 11, 2026. US 60 was closed in both directions at milepost 111 with no reopening time, phone lines went down, and Wickenburg police used an armored vehicle to move the children and staff of the Academy for Early Learning to the Community Center, where parents were waiting. Residents on South Kerkes Street were told to evacuate, and a shelter at Wickenburg High School housed five people overnight.
When a highway closes and phones go down, a town of this size runs on whatever is already on hand. A relief group or the school can set up a mobile kitchen trailer at a shelter, with a refrigerated trailer for meals and water, and a business near the burn area can keep a generator trailer on call.
Fires
The Rose Fire destroyed at least six homes south of Wickenburg and kept US 60 closed for nearly 23 hours in June 2024
The Rose Fire started after 4 p.m. on June 12, 2024, about 4 miles south of Wickenburg on the east side of US 60, and grew from under 10 acres to more than 160 in wind and heat. At least six structures were destroyed, Rio Vista Hills residents were evacuated overnight, and the main Phoenix-to-Las Vegas route stayed closed for nearly 23 hours, forcing drivers onto I-10 for roughly 30 extra minutes.
A closed US 60 is a closed supply route for a town like this one. A grocery, café or care home waiting on a delivery truck can keep a 20ft refrigerated trailer on the property as a backup plan, and displaced residents can use a refrigerated container to store food and medicine at a temporary shelter.

Fires
The Aztec Fire burned about 50 acres at Wickenburg on June 8, 2025 before forward progress stopped
The Aztec Fire started on Sunday, June 8, 2025 at Wickenburg and burned about 50 acres, according to Arizona forestry officials. Local engines protected nearby structures, and forward progress was stopped by 8:48 p.m. The state ordered a task force of engines, two hand crews and overhead support for Monday morning.
The second day of a fire is where the staffing really lives: hand crews, engines and overhead, many of them from out of the area. A mobile kitchen at the staging area feeds a task force of that size, and a portable refrigerated trailer keeps its water and food safe in the June heat.
Storms and outages
One to four inches of rain in 90 minutes flooded Wickenburg neighborhoods and cut power to 2,000 customers in July 2015
On a Saturday afternoon in July 2015, the Weather Service measured 1 to 4 inches of rain in and around Wickenburg in about 90 minutes. At least two washes overflowed into neighborhoods, some homes flooded, steel utility poles were bent, and more than 2,000 customers lost power. Crews had to replace more than 40 power poles, and about 100 customers were still waiting for service the next day.
Replacing 40 poles takes days, and a freezer or walk-in doesn't hold that long. A restaurant, market or ranch store in a monsoon town can sign up in advance for a generator trailer and an emergency refrigerated trailer, and put them in use the first evening instead of throwing out a week's inventory.
