The White Sage Fire east of Fredonia had burned 49,286 acres and was 0 percent contained on July 15, 2025

On July 15, 2025, the White Sage Fire was burning east of Fredonia at 49,286 acres and 0 percent contained, and no structures had been destroyed. Highway 89A, the main route to several national parks, was closed because of the fire. Officials said lightning started both the White Sage Fire and the Dragon Bravo Fire, and Fredonia was not threatened by flames.

A town that isn't burning can still lose a week of business when the highway shuts. A highway closure that stops visitors from arriving leaves a restaurant or store holding perishable stock it can't sell. A portable refrigerated trailer lets a restaurant hold a delivery it can't use right away, and a mobile kitchen trailer is available for crews who show up to fight the fire.

By July 26, 2025 the White Sage Fire was 81 percent contained at 58,985 acres, and Highway 89A had reopened

The July 26, 2025 update put the White Sage Fire at 58,985 acres and 81 percent contained, about 15 miles southeast of Fredonia, with 339 personnel on it and no structures lost. Highway 89A had reopened, though Highway 67 south of Jacob Lake stayed closed because of the separate Dragon Bravo Fire. House Rock Valley Road was heavily damaged and officials hoped to reopen it soon.

Reopening a highway isn't the end of a wildfire's effect on a town. Crews were still on the line, and a new incident team was set to take command that evening, which means a base camp that needs food. A portable refrigerated trailer and a generator trailer at a staging area keep a camp supplied without a nearby grocery.

The Dragon Bravo Fire destroyed the historic Grand Canyon Lodge and up to 80 surrounding structures in July 2025

In July 2025, the Dragon Bravo Fire, burning about 60 miles southeast of Fredonia, destroyed the historic Grand Canyon Lodge and up to 80 surrounding structures. The North Rim of the Grand Canyon was expected to stay closed through the end of the year. A later count put the final loss at 114 buildings and structures.

When a lodge burns, its food service stock, staff meals and vendor trucks all have to go somewhere. A 20ft refrigerated trailer can hold a kitchen's inventory off-site, and a mobile kitchen trailer feeds the crews that arrive afterward.

Fredonia's sawmill was hauling logs about 180 miles from Flagstaff in July 2025 as seasonal business suffered

Fredonia's mayor, Don Johnson, said in July 2025 that fires near the Grand Canyon would hurt the local economy because Kanab and Fredonia rely heavily on tourism. He said the town's sawmill had received no timber from Kaibab National Forest that year and was hauling logs from Flagstaff, about 180 miles away, and that seasonal business was suffering.

A small town with a tourism-heavy economy can't wait long for traffic to come back. A restaurant or motel that has stocked for a busy week and then loses it to a closure is left with food it can't use. A 12ft refrigerated trailer rented only for the season keeps the permanent cost low, and the rental calculator shows the daily rate.

Fredonia is a warehousing point for Colorado River outfitters and guides, about 75 miles from the North Rim

Fredonia, the most northerly town in Arizona and about four miles south of the Utah border, serves as a warehousing point for river-trip outfitters and guides on the Colorado River, the town says. Tourism and agriculture are its main industries, and the North Rim of the Grand Canyon is about 75 miles south, with the Vermilion and Shinarump Cliffs and Kaibab National Forest nearby.

A multi-day river trip takes a lot of food, and it all has to be staged somewhere cold before launch. Outfitters that stage in a small town have to keep the perishables in good condition until the trucks leave. A 20ft refrigerated trailer holds a launch's worth of supplies, and a portable refrigerated trailer can be rented for the busy months only.

A year after the Dragon Bravo Fire, the Grand Canyon Lodge area was still blocked off and Jacob Lake Inn recalled serving as a staging area

Lightning sparked the Dragon Bravo Fire on July 4, 2025, and it was not fully contained until September 2025, burning 145,504 acres and destroying 114 buildings and structures, including the Grand Canyon Lodge. A year later most of the lodge area was still blocked off. The National Park Service plans to rebuild, which will likely take several years, and Jacob Lake Inn served as a fire crew staging area before its staff and guests were evacuated.

A multi-year rebuild on the North Rim is a long job for contractors and crews who will need to eat on or near the site. A portable refrigerated trailer and a mobile kitchen trailer are the quickest way to set up a camp kitchen on a site with no building.

A deadly August 29, 2026 flash flood in Bright Angel Canyon washed out bridges and a section of the North Kaibab Trail

A deadly flash flood on August 29, 2026 swept Bright Angel Canyon, burying the Bright Angel Campground and the Phantom Ranch area in debris. Bridges were washed away, infrastructure was destroyed, and evacuations and closures followed. A later report said the flood also washed out a section of the North Kaibab Trail, which leads to the North Rim.

The same canyon system feeds visitors to both rims, and the North Rim is the one nearest Fredonia. Rebuilding a trail, a bridge and a campground takes crews working in remote terrain, and they need cold water and food for the length of the job. APS shut off power to about 6,000 customers around Flagstaff, including parts of Grand Canyon National Park, on April 22, 2026

On April 22, 2026, Arizona Public Service shut off power to about 6,000 customers in the Flagstaff area, including some locations in and around Grand Canyon National Park, because forecast gusts near 60 mph and dry terrain created extreme fire risk. The utility expected the outage to last 12 to 24 hours and restored power to all affected areas that evening.

A shutoff meant to prevent a fire is still an outage for the people in its path. A planned cut that lasts most of a day will warm a cooler, and the lead time is short. Northern Arizona businesses that keep a generator trailer and a portable refrigerated trailer on call have an answer ready. Fredonia is farther north than this shutoff reached.

State Route 389 is an isolated route to the Arizona Strip, running from Colorado City to Fredonia past Pipe Spring National Monument

State Route 389 runs from the Utah state line at Colorado City to Fredonia, where it meets U.S. 89A. It is described as an isolated route that provides access to the Arizona Strip, with Pipe Spring National Monument roughly at the halfway point. Fredonia is the largest town on the Arizona Strip and a cattle and ranching center.

On a route this isolated, the next grocery store is a long way off, and a driver who can't get there is on their own. Businesses and events along it have to bring in what they need.
