The West Kingman interchange is 80% done, with the last flyover girders due in October
ADOT's West Kingman traffic interchange project, which reworks the US 93 and I-40 connection, is about 80% complete. The new Fort Beale Drive tunnel opened in September, sound walls and rock blasting are finished, and the final girder sections for the flyover from southbound US 93 to eastbound I-40 are expected in October 2026.
Heavy highway work like this keeps crews at the site through a Mojave summer, and much of it happens before the sun gets high. A 20ft refrigerated container at the staging area stores crew water and lunches through the heat, and a mobile kitchen trailer feeds a crew on a site far from a restaurant.
Construction
ADOT has 11 miles of I-40 pavement and 23 miles of US 93 under construction around Kingman
Around Kingman, ADOT's list for 2026 includes an 11-mile pavement replacement on I-40 from Holy Moses Wash to Rattlesnake Wash, scheduled to finish in September 2026, and the Rancho Santa Fe interchange, scheduled for August 2026. Work on 23 miles of US 93 from Sanctuary Road to I-40 runs through early 2027.
That's a lot of road crews in one stretch of Mohave County, with long distances between the work and the nearest town. A refrigerated container or refrigerated trailer set up at a contractor's yard keeps cold supplies in one place for the whole job, and a generator trailer lets it run on a yard with no hookups.

Kingman's Route 66 Centennial calendar ran from a January downtown event to an October fest, after the first fest drew about 7,000
Kingman's 2026 Route 66 Centennial calendar included the Historic Route 66 Fun Run (May 1 to 3), the Grate Race lunch stop (June 26), the Route 66 Street Drags (October 9 to 11) and the Route 66 Fest (October 16 and 17), with live music, food and activities for kids. The first Route 66 Fest in 2021 drew an estimated 7,000 people, and the Arizona Route 66 Museum's exhibits were renovated in November 2025.
A multi-week stretch of events means downtown food service runs hard on weekends. A vendor or restaurant serving a festival crowd can use a rented refrigerated trailer at the edge of the closed street, and a mobile kitchen adds capacity for fest days when a lunch line gets longer than a dining room can handle.

The Mohave County Fair ran four days in September, with a carnival open until 11:30 p.m.
The 2026 Mohave County Fair ran September 17 to 20 at the fairgrounds, 2600 Fairgrounds Blvd. in Kingman, with livestock and crafts exhibits, live entertainment, vendors and a carnival. The carnival ran as late as 11 p.m. on Friday and 11:30 p.m. on Saturday, parking was free, and wristbands were $35 in advance.
Long fair days turn on the food: vendors work from midday through close, with September temperatures that still stress an ordinary cooler. A 20ft refrigerated trailer behind the vendor row keeps stock cold for all four days. For a group serving on reusable plates, a dishwashing trailer handles cleanup on site.

Hotel Beale, closed since 2012, got a $25,000 grant to restore its 1898 facade
The Historic Route 66 Association of Arizona awarded $25,000 in August 2024 toward restoring the facade of Hotel Beale in downtown Kingman. William Harvey Hubbs built the hotel in 1898, and it's been closed since 2012. Architects are basing the facade work on an old photograph, and Kingman Main Street hopes to raise more funds and relight the rooftop neon sign.
Restoration work on a downtown landmark brings trades, grant volunteers and dedication events, all in a spot without a working kitchen. A mobile kitchen trailer parked on the street feeds crews and guests at a rededication, and a refrigerated trailer beside it holds the catering for an event on a historic block with no loading dock.
Fires
A recycling yard fire on Route 66 burned about 250 vehicles in 100-degree heat
A fire at Bulldog Disposal, a recycling center on Historic Route 66 in north Kingman, started around 2:30 p.m. one Monday and was not fully fought until about 10 p.m. It destroyed about 250 vehicles, piles of recyclable material and heavy equipment. Fifty-four firefighters worked it in winds of 25 to 35 mph and 100-degree heat, BNSF halted trains for part of the afternoon, and Route 66 was closed so hoses could reach hydrants.
Long fires in the heat send crews through a lot of water and ice, and firefighters were treated for heat exhaustion. Staging a refrigerated trailer near the command post gives crews a place for cold drinks and meals, and a generator trailer lets it run when power on the block is shut off for safety.

Lightning hit a transformer and burned Uptown Drug and Kings Liquor, a $3 million loss
Lightning struck an electrical transformer on a Sunday during a storm and started a fire that destroyed Uptown Drug and the adjoining Kings Liquor in north Kingman, with damage estimated at $3 million. Firefighters went into the block building around 7 p.m. but pulled back because the roof was about to collapse. No one was hurt. The same storm knocked down seven poles near Yucca and left about 500 customers without power for more than 14 hours.
A drugstore and a liquor store both depend on refrigeration for part of their stock, and after a fire or a long outage that stock can't be saved by a normal cooler. A 12ft refrigerated trailer can take what's recoverable, and a generator trailer helps a neighbor that lost power for 14 hours stay open.

Interstate Trailers added a 21,000-square-foot building in Kingman Industrial Park
Interstate Trailers announced in February 2022 that it would add a new 21,000-square-foot building to its Kingman Industrial Park site, on city-owned land next to the existing plant. The company planned to invest upwards of $2 million, add 20 jobs and keep its current 140 employees.
Trailer manufacturing is one of the places a rented unit fits right in: a plant that's expanding needs space for crew lunches and drinks for months. A 20ft refrigerated container works as a seasonal cooler on the job site, and a mobile kitchen is an option for a ribbon-cutting or an all-hands lunch when the building isn't ready for a cafeteria.

A flood advisory covered Kingman, Golden Valley and Yucca for two days, with a dust storm warning on US 93
On a Sunday evening in July 2022 the National Weather Service issued a flash flood warning for Kingman and a flood advisory running through Tuesday night for Golden Valley, Kingman, Valentine, Yucca, Wikieup and Dolan Springs. One to two inches of rain fell between Valentine and Peach Springs, and a dust storm warning cut visibility near zero on US 93 from Kingman to the Nevada line.
Washed-out roads and low visibility interrupt the trucks that supply restaurants and stores across a county this size. A refrigerated trailer in a town's own lot holds a few days of stock while deliveries are held up, and a generator trailer keeps it running if a storm takes down lines.

In May 2022 the Mohave County Board of Supervisors voted to support land applications for three Bureau of Land Management parcels totaling more than 370 acres near I-40, a roughly $1.85 million plan to buy and develop a new fairgrounds. County Manager Sam Elters said the current fairgrounds can't be expanded, and the site could also hold a medical examiner facility. Nothing was approved yet.
A fairgrounds on undeveloped land starts with no kitchen, no cold storage and no utilities, all of which an event has to supply itself for the first seasons. A 20ft refrigerated trailer and a mobile kitchen trailer are the self-contained pair that lets a fair or rodeo serve food on raw ground, with a generator trailer in place of utilities.
