Storms and outages
APS shut off power to 8,000 around Flagstaff, and a Doney Park market ran on three generators
On Saturday, June 27, 2026 APS cut power to about 8,000 homes and businesses in and around Flagstaff and the Grand Canyon to head off a wildfire in dry, windy conditions, a second shutoff after one in April. In Doney Park, Mountain View Market kept its doors open on three generators, switched off nonessential equipment to protect cold food, and offered its refrigerators to neighbors for medications and breast milk.
A planned shutoff gives a day's notice, which is just enough for a business to line up backup. A refrigerated trailer with a generator trailer is a larger version of what that market did, with enough cold space for a grocery's whole walk-in if the shutoff runs into a second day.
Winter storms
Snow caved in a section of the Flagstaff Safeway roof, and the store was closed for 18 hours
During the heavy snow of early 2023, six or seven trusses gave way at the back of the Safeway off Highway 89 near Flagstaff Mall, leaving a caved-in area about 20 by 20 feet. Crews evacuated customers and employees, and the city posted an Unsafe to Occupy notice on the doors. The store reopened at 10 a.m. the next day after engineers cleared it, about 18 hours later. Nobody was hurt.
A grocery has a huge amount of cold stock sitting under that roof, and 18 hours is long enough to matter if the inspection stretches. A 20ft refrigerated trailer in the lot can take frozen and dairy while engineers decide whether to reopen, and the same unit works as extra cold storage during the holiday rush in a Flagstaff winter.

Floods
A 200-year rainstorm on the Museum Fire burn scar flooded 88 Flagstaff properties
On August 17, 2021, about two years after the Museum Fire, two to three and a half inches of rain fell on the burn scar in one to two hours, described as a 200 to 500-year event. Floodwater damaged 88 private properties, put water inside 14 homes and flooded the hallways at Killip Elementary. Private damage ran just over $1 million and public damage $2.3 million across 33 properties, and the Forest Service later sent $3.5 million toward runoff work.
Flood response is a long stretch, and relief centers and recovery crews need to eat. A mobile kitchen trailer and a portable refrigerated container let a nonprofit or an agency feed volunteers at the sites in Mount Elden Estates and Sunnyside, where the water was worst, without relying on a kitchen the flood has already damaged.
Floods
A study put the cost of the next Flagstaff burn-scar flood between $535 million and $3 billion
Two studies presented to the Coconino County Flood Control District in February 2024 modeled what a fire on the San Francisco Peaks would do to Flagstaff. Flows in the Rio de Flag could rise three to six times through downtown and 31 times in Fort Valley. NAU estimated losses of about $535 million for a small fire followed by one rain event, and nearly $3 billion for a severe one. The scenarios were calibrated against the Museum and Pipeline fires.
Numbers like that make an evacuation plan sound less abstract. A business or agency in Flagstaff's flood zones has two jobs: get people out and protect what it can't move quickly, including food. Standing arrangements for a refrigerated trailer rental mean cold storage can be somewhere safe by the time the water arrives.

The Flagstaff Science Festival marked 25 years as a Dark Sky City, with a dozen telescopes at Buffalo Park
The Flagstaff Festival of Science, billed as the nation's longest-running free science festival, centered its 2026 run on the 25th anniversary of Flagstaff becoming the first International Dark Sky City. A free star party at Buffalo Park put more than a dozen telescopes in public hands. The Flagstaff Star Party ran October 1 to 3, and Oktoberfest was on the 3rd.
Free events pull people in from out of town, and star parties run well past dinner. Vendors serving a crowd in the cold have to keep product at the right temperature for hours. A 12ft refrigerated trailer is small enough for a park lot, and a mobile kitchen trailer can serve hot food late into the night.
Large events
The Route 66 Centennial filled Heritage Square on June 6 with music and 3D street art
Flagstaff marked the Route 66 Centennial on June 6, 2026 with free music around Heritage Square downtown and 3D-illusion street art. The same weekend, Hullabaloo took over Wheeler Park on June 6 and 7, and the Flagstaff Wool and Fiber Festival ran alongside it.
Two festivals within blocks of each other in the same weekend is a lot of food service for downtown. A caterer or food vendor can set up a refrigerated trailer rental behind Heritage Square and run both days from it, and a dishwashing trailer keeps a sit-down vendor from running out of plates before the parade of visitors ends.

Pride in the Pines turned 30 at Thorpe Park, the same day as the Beer Festival
The 30th Flagstaff Pride in the Pines took place at Thorpe Park on June 20, 2026, free but with a reserved ticket. The Flagstaff Beer Festival was on the same date, and the Piano Festival began that day and ran through June 27.
A festival day that starts in the morning and keeps going into the evening needs steady cold storage for drinks and food. Anyone catering at Thorpe Park can use a 20ft refrigerated trailer at the edge of the lot instead of driving back to a commissary between rushes, and a generator trailer powers it where the park has no outlet.

Labor Day weekend in Flagstaff: the county fair and Art in the Park share a calendar
The 2026 Coconino County Fair ran September 4 to 7, and Art in the Park ran September 5 to 7, so Labor Day weekend had two big draws on the same calendar. Fairs and art shows both come with food stalls, and most of them stay put for the whole run.
A county fair keeps vendors on site for four days and a lot of dairy, meat and produce moves through them. A refrigerated trailer shared by several vendors is a practical way to keep that product cold on the fairgrounds, and a dishwashing trailer is the easy solution for a food court that doesn't have enough sinks.

Renovation
Northern Arizona Healthcare is rebuilding the Summit Center while it keeps operating
Northern Arizona Healthcare began a phased renovation of the Summit Center at 1485 N. Turquoise Drive, with a full interior remodel and a 6,000-square-foot addition. Phase one was expected to last 18 months, with first patient visits in mid-fall 2026 and two more phases through spring 2028. It adds new operating rooms, a sterile processing department and a wound clinic with hyperbaric treatment, and it stays open for scheduled surgeries throughout.
Clinics that keep operating while the walls are open need their supply chain protected, and anything that has to stay cold needs a plan when the building's power or cooling is shut down for a phase. A temporary refrigerated trailer in the parking lot keeps supplies in range, and a generator trailer covers planned power switchovers.
Construction
Northern Arizona Healthcare planned a $750 million campus near Fort Tuthill
In 2021 Northern Arizona Healthcare outlined a plan for a campus of at least $750 million on 188 acres near Fort Tuthill, about seven miles south of Flagstaff Medical Center. It called for an ambulatory care center of up to 175,000 square feet, a hospital of around 700,000 square feet and a hotel of nearly 200 rooms. The existing medical center, nearly 50 years old, would eventually close.
A build of that scale is years of crews working outside Flagstaff in cold mornings and hot afternoons, and years of staging yards. A 20ft refrigerated container works as site cold storage for a contractor's lunches and drinks, and a mobile kitchen trailer feeds a crew where the nearest restaurant is miles away.
