The 24th spring training in Surprise opened with a cashless ballpark and a free-parking lot
Spring training 2026 was the 24th edition in Surprise, with the Rangers and Royals opening the home schedule on February 20 at Surprise Stadium, 15850 N. Bullard Ave. The park runs fully cashless and parking is free, and promotions that week bundled hot dogs, drinks and popcorn into a $50 lawn pack.
Selling that much food across a month of home dates asks a lot of a stadium's own coolers. A portable refrigerated trailer parked near the service gate gives a concession operator extra cold space for the season, and a mobile kitchen trailer can take on prep for the busiest weekend dates.

A 35,000-square-foot community center is opening in the Original Town Site
The Surprise Community and Resource Center opens September 3, 2026, at Hollyhock Street and Santa Fe Drive in the Original Town Site. The roughly 35,000-square-foot building brings the Surprise Resource Center, Hollyhock Library and Senior Center under one roof, with funding from Maricopa County, a federal health grant and the Sprouts Healthy Communities Foundation.
A building that houses a resource center and senior programs ends up hosting meals, food distributions and community events. A refrigerated trailer in the lot lets organizers hold donated food and prepared meals through an opening-week crowd, and a mobile kitchen can serve a grand-opening lunch before the building's own kitchen is fully in service.

Ground broke on a 32,000-square-foot police substation in northwest Surprise
The City of Surprise broke ground on May 12, 2026 on a nearly 32,000-square-foot police substation at San Ysidro Road and 163rd Avenue. The building will hold about 60 officers and support staff, with space for briefings, evidence processing and officer wellness, and completion is expected in fall 2027.
Over a year of construction in the northwest edge of town means long days for trades with little nearby to eat. A 20ft refrigerated container on the staging pad keeps water, ice and lunches cold through the summer, and a mobile kitchen trailer can feed the crew on peak pour and framing days.
Incidents
A roof fire at the Surprise Sam's Club shut the warehouse for the day
Firefighters were called on August 29, 2023 to a roof fire at the Sam's Club near Loop 303 and Bell Road in Surprise. Plywood roofing materials and foam insulation burned. Early reports blamed solar panels, but those were later found to be inaccurate. No one was hurt, and the store stayed closed that evening because of water damage on top of the roof damage.
A warehouse club carries an enormous volume of refrigerated and frozen product, and water coming through a ceiling is a problem a cooler can't solve. A 20ft refrigerated trailer at the loading dock gives a store somewhere to move at-risk stock fast, with a generator trailer if the building's power has to be shut off.
Storms and outages
The August 19 dust storm slammed the East Valley, then rolled west through Surprise
A monsoon storm hit late on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, with a dust wall arriving from the east around 9:30 p.m. The worst damage landed in Mesa, Gilbert, Tempe and Ahwatukee. SRP counted about 17,000 customers without power at the peak, and the storm moved west through Peoria, Surprise and Sun City with wind and heavy rain. Only a handful of APS customers lost power in Surprise.
Surprise got off lightly this time, but the same line of storms can reach the West Valley with more punch another night. A restaurant or store here that keeps a plan ready, such as a generator trailer and a refrigerated trailer on call, is the one that keeps product cold if the lights go out.
Heat
Surprise opened four heat relief stations for the summer of 2026
The city's summer 2026 guide lists four cooling stations through the Heat Relief Network: Hollyhock Library on Hollyhock Street, Surprise Regional Library on Bullard Avenue, Asante Library on Vereda Solana Drive, and the Salvation Army North West Valley Corps on Avenue of the Arts Boulevard.
Places like these are where cold water and shelf-stable food get handed out by the case. Anyone organizing a larger summer drive or a neighborhood cooling event can stage supplies in a portable 12ft refrigerated trailer beside the building, so bottled water and perishables aren't sitting in a car trunk at 110 degrees. For a bigger distribution, a 20ft refrigerated container holds a lot more.

Surprise lit up its parks on July 4 with fireworks at 8:45 p.m.
The city's Independence Day celebration for 2026 ran from 6 to 9 p.m. at Surprise Community Park, 16089 N. Bullard Ave., and Mark Coronado Park, 15960 N. Bullard Ave. Fireworks started at 8:45 p.m..
Park-based holiday events run on cold drinks, frozen desserts and anything that can be grilled. Vendors working two parks at once do better with a refrigerated trailer rental at the shared service area than with a trunk full of ice, and a mobile kitchen can cover cooking for a food court that has to be up and running by the time the first families arrive.

The Desert Fall Festival ran every night for five weeks near Tierra Buena and Bullard
The Desert Fall Festival in Surprise ran from September 26 through November 1, 2025, open daily from 5:30 to 10:30 p.m. near Tierra Buena Lane and Bullard Avenue. It had a zipline, a desert pumpkin hunt, archery and live music, with pizza, giant turkey legs, churros and caramel apples on the food side.
A festival that opens seven nights a week for five weeks doesn't restock from a grocery run. The vendors need a steady cold chain for dairy, meat and drinks on a site that's open in the evening heat. A 20ft refrigerated trailer behind the food area gives them that, and a dishwashing trailer keeps reusable ware moving.

The Wall That Heals stayed open around the clock in Surprise, and Vet Fest followed at the stadium
In April 2026 Surprise hosted The Wall That Heals at Mark Coronado Park from April 9 to 12, open 24 hours until 2 p.m. on the last day, with a replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial and a mobile Education Center. Vet Fest followed on April 11 at Surprise Stadium, free to attend from 5 to 8 p.m.
Events that run overnight and into a stadium evening put steady demand on volunteers and food vendors. A mobile kitchen trailer can feed organizers and visitors at a park without a permanent kitchen, and a portable refrigerated trailer keeps drinks and meals cold for as many days as the display stays up.
Construction
163rd Avenue is being widened to three lanes each way while Cactus Road finishes up
Construction on 163rd Avenue between Happy Valley and Jomax roads began in January 2026, widening it to three lanes in each direction, improving the Jomax intersection and adding drainage work with money from the 2023 bond election. Cactus Road was widened to six lanes in two sections, finished in August and October 2025.
Road crews work long shifts in the sun, and a project like this runs through a full Surprise summer. A 20ft refrigerated container at the staging area stores ice, water and meals for the crew, and a mobile kitchen can serve lunch on site rather than losing an hour to a drive-through.
