The 37th Gary Hardt Memorial Rodeo ran May 14–16, 2026 with a pink night and a patriot night
The 37th annual Gary Hardt Memorial Rodeo ran Thursday through Saturday, May 14–16, 2026 at the Payson Event Center on the Beeline Highway. It opened with a women's barrel race on Thursday, then PRCA performances on Friday (Tough Enough to Wear Pink Night) and Saturday (Patriot Night, with free entry for active-duty service members), with food and shopping vendors throughout.
Three nights of rodeo with vendors on the grounds means concession stands loaded with meat, drinks and ice, and a parking lot instead of a kitchen. A concession group or a committee can hold it all in a 20ft refrigerated trailer behind the stands and cook from a mobile kitchen trailer, with a generator trailer for power.

Payson's World's Oldest Continuous Rodeo ran August 15–16, 2025, a tradition dating to 1884
The World's Oldest Continuous Rodeo ran August 15 and 16, 2025 at the Payson Event Center on South Beeline Highway. The PRCA-sanctioned rodeo dates to 1884 and billed itself as the longest-running in the country, with a Wrangler Bucking Cancer night, a Patriot Performance, dances after the last bull each night and a lineup that runs from bull riding to mutton bustin'.
August is the hottest part of the Rim Country rodeo calendar, and spectators, riders and stock contractors all want cold water. A rodeo committee or a concessionaire can hold drinks and food in a 12ft refrigerated trailer at the grounds, and the dance and the dinner can be fed from a mobile kitchen on the lot.

Fires
The Highline Fire burned nearly 5,000 acres north of Payson and evacuated La Cienega and Ellison Creek Estates
The Highline Fire started June 10, 2017 about eight miles north of Payson, in the old Dude Fire scar, and by June 16 it had burned 4,929 acres and was 35% contained with 1,069 people assigned. La Cienega and Ellison Creek Estates remained evacuated, Bonita Creek was on pre-evacuation status, a Red Cross shelter opened at Payson High School, and large animals could go to the Payson Multi-event Center.
A week-long fire means a shelter, a staging area and a lot of mouths to feed, and the high school gym and the event center aren't kitchens. A mobile kitchen trailer can feed evacuees and crews, and a refrigerated trailer with a generator trailer keeps the food safe when the shelter has no spare capacity.
Storms and outages
A January 2017 winter storm knocked out power to about 4,300 customers in Payson and Pine-Strawberry
After a major storm moved through Friday and early Saturday, January 20–21, 2017, with a foot or more of snow at higher elevations, about 4,300 APS customers in Payson and Pine-Strawberry lost power on Saturday night, mostly from downed lines or blown fuses. Most outages were resolved by Sunday afternoon, with more snow forecast above 6,000 feet.
Cold storage and a snowstorm sound unrelated, but a restaurant, grocery or care home still loses product when the power goes out, and a snow-blocked road slows a repair. A generator trailer and a refrigerated trailer arranged ahead of the winter season give a Rim Country business a plan that doesn't depend on how fast a line crew can get in.

A May 2025 wildfire town hall in Payson covered utility power shutoffs as a last resort
In May 2025, ahead of the fire season, the Arizona Corporation Commission held a wildfire town hall in Payson where APS, SRP and TEP described vegetation management and grid hardening, including public safety power shutoffs as a last resort during extreme fire risk. APS had expanded its shutoff program to parts of Pinal and Navajo counties, affecting about 65,000 customers, and the commission urged residents to maintain defensible space and keep utility contact information current.
A planned power shutoff is still an outage for a refrigerated shelf or a freezer. A restaurant, a market or a care facility in the pines can line up a generator trailer and a refrigerated trailer before a red-flag day, so the shutoff doesn't also cost the week's inventory.

Payson asked developers in April 2026 to propose a mixed-use project on 1.52 acres beside American Gulch
On April 4, 2026, the Town of Payson published a request for a developer partner for a signature mixed-use project on a 1.52-acre town-owned parcel on Main Street next to American Gulch, with responses due May 14, 2026. The town wants a pedestrian-oriented layout of commercial space, public areas and gathering spaces to anchor Main Street's redevelopment and improve the gulch.
A mixed-use Main Street project is also where restaurants and small food businesses land, often before the buildings are done. A tenant can start with a refrigerated trailer and a mobile kitchen on site, and a grand opening for the plaza can be catered from the same setup without waiting for a finished kitchen.

A 94-room Home2 Suites planned for Aero Drive won a height variance to 56 feet
In March 2022, Payson's Planning and Zoning Commission approved a height variance to 56 feet, up from the 45-foot limit, for a proposed 94-room Home2 Suites by Hilton at 110 West Aero Drive. The hotel would add a 100-seat meeting area and an indoor pool, and approval was conditional on widening West Aero Drive, adding a sidewalk and securing design review.
A hotel with a meeting room and a breakfast service puts a kitchen into the build long before the first guest. A contractor can keep crew meals in a refrigerated container on site, and when the hotel opens, a caterer for the first events can use a mobile kitchen and a 12ft refrigerated trailer at the meeting area.

Payson's 2022 infrastructure list topped out near $160 million, from stormwater to fire stations
In May 2022, Payson put together an infrastructure priorities list that topped out near $160 million, including $25 million for stormwater management, $17 million to replace two outdated fire stations and expand the police station, $12 million for American Gulch floodplain mitigation and $10 million for Payson Event Center improvements, including covered buildings.
A list like that is years of excavation, storm sewer work, station builds and event-center construction. Crews working a storm sewer or a fire station site eat in the field, and a mobile kitchen and a refrigerated container make that easier. Once the Event Center is upgraded, its rodeo and festival vendors can add a 12ft refrigerated trailer for peak weekends.

A $76.2 million widening of SR 260 east of Payson began in June 2026 and runs about two and a half years
ADOT's SR 260 Lion Springs Improvement Project, which began in June 2026, adds a travel lane in each direction between mileposts 256 and 260, plus a center-turn lane and median, a frontage road for Diamond Point, three wildlife crossovers and drainage work. It costs $76.2 million and will take about two and a half years, including winter shutdowns, with one lane in each direction open and daytime lane restrictions.
A two-and-a-half-year job on the highway to the Rim means a crew that eats on site for several summers, and a travel corridor where a lane restriction can slow a supply truck. A contractor can feed a crew from a mobile kitchen trailer and hold food in a refrigerated container at the staging yard, and businesses along the corridor can keep a refrigerated trailer on call if deliveries get delayed.
Fires
A fire near Forest Lakes in March 2026 was one of the first of what federal forecasters expected to be an early, intense season
On March 21, 2026, a small fire of an acre or two burned near Forest Lakes, east of Payson, and the Forest Lakes Fire District responded. The National Interagency Fire Center called it one of the first blazes of what it expects to be an early, intense fire season, with drought conditions expected to return across Arizona by May.
An early season stretches the fire calendar by weeks, and crews and communities need cold storage and food for longer. A fire district or a mountain community planning a fundraiser, an open house or a training day can use a mobile kitchen trailer, a refrigerated trailer and a generator trailer, set up on a station lot without a commercial kitchen.
