Storms and outages
Globe took about 2.5 inches of rain in 24 hours in September 2025, and roughly 3,000 volunteers showed up to clear mud
About 2.5 inches of rain fell on Globe within 24 hours in late September 2025, flooding creeks, roads and downtown. Gov. Katie Hobbs declared a state of emergency for Gila County the next day, and downtown reopened at noon on Sunday. Several hundred to roughly 1,000 people turned out to clear mud that day, and about 3,000 volunteers from Arizona and neighboring states arrived on Monday. Three people died.
A flood that fills a main street with mud puts every restaurant, grocery and corner store at risk of losing its product the same afternoon. The question isn't whether the kitchen will be cleaned; it's where the food goes in the meantime. A portable refrigerated trailer on high ground can take a week of inventory, and a mobile kitchen trailer can feed volunteers and crews while the restaurants dry out.
Storms and outages
About 1,000 floating propane tanks turned the September 2025 Globe flood into a hazardous materials emergency
The September 2025 Globe flood carried about 1,000 propane tanks downstream, which created a major hazardous materials emergency on top of the flooding itself. Heavy equipment was used to remove tanks dislodged from a distribution facility. The mayor said neighboring fire districts couldn't respond because of where their stations sit and because highways were impassable, and Pinal Creek east of Broad Street was being cleared by a U.S. Forest Service hotshot crew.
Emergency crews in that situation work long hours in the mud, and the first problem is not equipment but food, water and cold storage for the responders. An incident base can set up a mobile kitchen trailer and a 20ft refrigerated trailer beside it for the water and meals, and a generator trailer keeps the base lit and the food cold when the town's grid is down.

La Casita Café, Globe's 79-year-old restaurant on Broad Street, reopened eight days past its 40-day goal after the flood
La Casita Café, a 79-year-old restaurant on Broad Street in Globe, was badly damaged in the September 2025 flood, and people trapped inside were rescued with help from nearby businesses. The owners set a goal of reopening within 40 days and missed it by eight days. The restaurant now has normal hours with no restrictions, a year after the flood.
Forty-eight days is a quick turnaround for a restaurant that took on a wall of water. Keeping a team employed and serving, even from the parking lot, helps. Renting a mobile kitchen trailer lets them cook while the dining room is rebuilt, and a portable refrigerated trailer stores the food while the walk-in is repaired.

Topo Joe's in Globe was gutted by the flood, then rebuilt and expanded with a coffee bar
Topo Joe's, a mountain bike and UTV rental shop in Globe, was gutted by the September 2025 flood. The owners rebuilt and expanded, adding a coffee bar, while some storefronts across the street were still rebuilding a year later. The mayor said businesses had spent hundreds of thousands of dollars of their own money because state and federal aid hadn't covered it.
A rebuild that adds a coffee bar means a new set of equipment, a new supplier list and a need for refrigerated space for milk and syrups before the permanent system is installed. Shops adding food service in a renovation sometimes start with a 12ft refrigerated trailer beside the building, and a portable refrigerated trailer is easy to take back once the new cooler is in.

Globe received $24 million from the Natural Resources Conservation Service to widen and stabilize waterways at Beer Tree Crossing
Crews were working daily at Beer Tree Crossing in Globe to widen and stabilize waterways, funded by $24 million from the Natural Resources Conservation Service. The work is in two phases. Separately, the city eased permitting for basic cleanup right after the flood and now holds pre-development meetings for larger projects.
Channel work and bank stabilization put equipment and crews in the same few blocks for months. A project that size can lose hours to lunch logistics. A contractor can set up a mobile kitchen trailer beside the work area, with a portable refrigerated trailer next to it for the food and water that make a long summer shift bearable.

Six downtown Globe buildings on and near Broad Street were still boarded up and fenced off eight months after the flood
As of June 2026, six downtown Globe buildings on and near Broad Street remained boarded up and fenced off. The city's goal was to save them, though demolition was being discussed. One owner planned to demolish one building and was seeking sponsors and funding, and was fighting to keep a corner brick building standing. Globe's mayor said the town would be in recovery for years to come, and county work on bank stabilization and 3D flood mapping was about to start.
A block with six empty buildings is a block where the surviving businesses depend on whoever is still working. Restaurants, grocers and the contractors rebuilding are all competing for cold storage and kitchen space in a very small area. Owners can add capacity with a portable refrigerated trailer or a 20ft refrigerated container until their own buildings are cleared for reuse.

Globe's mayor pointed to the 180,747-acre Telegraph Fire burn scar above the city after the September 2025 flood
In an interview after the September 2025 flood, Globe Mayor Al Gameros said the Telegraph Fire, which burned 180,747 acres in 2021, had damaged the land above the city, and that there was nothing to hold the water back. Officials later said they wanted to address the burn scar in the surrounding mountains to slow runoff in heavy rain.
A burn scar changes the way a town should plan: every monsoon season becomes a flood season, and the waiting is part of the job. Businesses in Globe and Miami that carry perishable inventory can add a portable refrigerated trailer to their summer plan and keep a generator trailer on call for outages, so a washed-out road doesn't wipe out the stock.
Storms and outages
A flood on August 18, 2021 closed U.S. 60 in Globe and cut off access to Cobre Valley Medical Center
On August 18, 2021, steady rain sent water and debris down a burn scar in the Pinal Mountains and into Globe. Floodwater closed U.S. 60 in both directions near milepost 247 for part of the day and cut off access to Cobre Valley Medical Center. A mobile home park was overwhelmed quickly, and the deputy fire chief said some homes were lifted from their foundations with people still inside. Firefighters went house to house, and no injuries were reported.
A hospital cut off by water is a reminder that critical sites need their own backup, not only the city's. Kitchens, pharmacies and medical offices that store food, vaccines or lab samples can keep a portable refrigerated trailer on call, and a generator trailer lets a facility power its cooling during an outage that blocks road access for a day.

The resort stayed closed all week, reopened on August 19, and the Arizona State Poker Championship was canceled.

The Griffin Fire burned more than 60,000 acres near Globe in August 2020 and closed U.S. 60 for 67 miles
Lightning started two fires on August 17, 2020, and six days later they merged into the Griffin Fire in the Apache Mountains, in the Tonto National Forest. By August 26 it had burned more than 60,056 acres and was 28% contained, with over 550 firefighters on the line. Gila County ordered evacuations east of U.S. 60, including Fairgrounds Road and Winters Ranch, and U.S. 60 closed in both directions for 67 miles from Globe to the State Route 73 junction.
A 67-mile highway closure leaves a town without deliveries, without visitors and without the through traffic that keeps the gas station and diner open. Businesses holding perishables have nowhere to move them. A 20ft refrigerated trailer can be staged early in fire season as a backup plan, and a mobile kitchen trailer can feed firefighters near the line.

FEMA denied Globe's flood request in December 2025 and the appeal in July 2026, leaving businesses to rebuild with their own money
Gov. Katie Hobbs declared a state of emergency in September 2025 and asked for a federal Major Disaster Declaration about a month later. FEMA denied the request in December 2025 and the appeal in July 2026, concluding the flooding wasn't severe enough. The final damage assessment was about $96 million, according to Mayor Al Gameros, and local officials said the community would keep rebuilding without the extra federal share they had hoped for.
With the federal help off the table, repairs are being paid for by owners, and they tend to reopen in stages: the kitchen first, the dining room later, the sign last. A restaurant, grocer or inn can phase a rebuild by renting a portable refrigerated trailer by the month while the cooler is replaced, and by using a mobile kitchen trailer so the doors can open before the final inspection.
