16,161 fans at Sloan Park, and every one of them wanted a cold drink
On March 8, 2025 the Cubs drew 16,161 to Sloan Park, a new single-game spring training record that topped the 16,152 they set in 2023. By 2026 the team was reporting nearly 250,000 fans a spring and 12 straight years of attendance records. That is a small city's worth of people to feed in Mesa's March sun.
Concession stands run on volume, and volume needs cold storage. Beyond what the ballpark's permanent coolers hold, a refrigerated trailer rental parked behind the concourse gives a caterer or vendor room for extra beer, pre-cut fruit and ice on the big dates, and a mobile kitchen trailer handles the overflow of food prep that the stadium kitchen can't.
Heat
Spring training in Mesa now plays through 105-degree afternoons
The 2026 Cactus League drew about 1.75 million fans to 237 games, up 3.4 percent from 2025, even as March ran hot. On March 20 Phoenix reached 105, and eight of that day's nine games were pushed later to dodge the worst of the sun. Sloan Park averaged 12,644 a game, the best in the league.
Heat like that is a food-safety problem before it is a comfort one. Potato salad, dairy and raw chicken sitting in a vendor's cooler in the lot don't last through a doubleheader. A 20ft refrigerated trailer holds a steady temperature all day, which is why event organizers in a hot city book portable cold storage ahead of the season, not on the morning it hits 105.

Construction
Sloan Park added 24,400 square feet before the 2026 season
Ahead of the 2026 Cactus League season, Sloan Park got a 6,400-square-foot clubhouse addition and a new 18,000-square-foot training building, with Populous as lead architect and Mortenson as general contractor. Pitchers and catchers reported February 11. The park opened in 2014, and the City of Mesa and the Cubs own it together.
A job like that has a crew on site for months, and a crew needs lunch and cold water. A 20ft refrigerated container in the staging area works as site cold storage for the whole build, and for trades working in Mesa's summer, a container full of ice and drinks is not a luxury. It is how the afternoon shift stays on schedule.
Storms and outages
A transformer fire at Power and University left Mesa dark for most of a day
A transformer owned by SRP caught fire around 11:45 a.m. at Power Road and University Drive. Early counts of 30,000 customers rose to 80,000, and by the time power came back around 11:30 that night, close to 150,000 homes and businesses across Mesa and Apache Junction had gone through it. The Mesa Convention Center opened as an emergency shelter, hospitals ran on generators, and Fry's gave away ice.
Eleven hours without power is far past what a closed refrigerator can cover. For restaurants, grocers and caterers, emergency cold storage means a refrigerated trailer with a generator trailer alongside, so the product stays cold on its own power instead of waiting on the grid. It is the same logic that sent people to the ice line that evening.

Fires
A fire at University and Crismon knocked out power to 5,000 in east Mesa
On July 11, 2024 a fire near University Drive and Crismon Road destroyed one home and badly damaged a second, with nearby residents evacuated. Rural Metro said downed power lines likely started it, and SRP confirmed the blaze tripped its circuits. More than 5,000 customers were dark by about 6 p.m., and power wasn't fully back until Friday morning.
A night-long outage in July is the scenario cold storage planners worry about. East Mesa restaurants and markets lose a full day's inventory if the walk-in warms. A portable 12ft refrigerated trailer fits in a small lot, and a generator trailer runs it while the lines are being repaired.
Storms and outages
Fifty mile-an-hour wind snapped power poles on Ellsworth Road
Mesa's first major monsoon storm of 2018 came through on a Monday with winds near 50 mph and about 1.10 inches of rain. Poles snapped along Ellsworth Road between Southern and Broadway, metal was ripped off mobile homes at Valle del Oro, and fewer than 8,000 SRP customers lost power, mostly in Mesa and Apache Junction. SRP handed out free ice at a QT on South Crismon the next morning.
The ice line is the clearest sign of who needs help keeping food cold after a storm. For a grocery or kitchen that can't wait for linemen, a portable refrigerated container delivered to the lot holds the stock at temperature until the lights come back, and it can be hooked to a generator if repairs run long.

A truck crash cut power in Signal Butte on a 119-degree day
On July 19, 2023 a truck accident near 102nd Street and Quarterline Road took out power for at least 4,000 people in the Signal Butte Ranch area of Mesa, and sparked small brush fires. A second outage that evening hit another 4,000 farther west. The high reached 119, and some homes weren't expected back until almost 10 p.m. Rural Metro opened a cooling center at the crash site's corner.
In 119 degrees a grocery or restaurant doesn't get the four-hour margin the textbook gives it. A refrigerated trailer with its own generator is the quickest way to move a walk-in's worth of food to safety, and it's the plan worth having on file before the crash that causes the outage.
Fires
La Patrona burned down less than a year after it opened
La Patrona Mexican Cuisine, a standalone building near Main Street and Stapley Drive, opened in May 2019. At around 2 a.m. on February 7, 2020 someone called in a fire. Crews arrived to find the building burning too fiercely to enter, and the restaurant was destroyed. No one was inside and nobody was hurt.
When a restaurant burns, the inventory goes with it, and the owner's other locations suddenly have to cover its customers. A rented refrigerated trailer behind a sister kitchen takes the extra stock, and a mobile kitchen trailer lets a team keep cooking and catering while a rebuild gets planned.

Super Bowl LVII put 103,000 out-of-state visitors in Glendale's hotels and restaurants
Glendale is about 29 miles west of Mesa.
Glendale: Super Bowl LVII at State Farm Stadium in 2023 had a $1.3 billion economic impact on Arizona, according to the host committee. In October 2021, Tolleson's City Council approved a roughly 15-acre mixed-use project at the northeast corner of 99th Avenue and Van Buren Street, just south of I-10. It is the first master-planned development in the area, with nine lots set aside for restaurants, shops, drive-thrus, a four-story hotel and a light industrial building.

Mesa voters approved $260 million, and the projects are coming up one by one
Mesa voters approved a $260 million bond in 2024, $90 million for public safety and $170 million for recreation, education and culture. Five park playgrounds were slated to be rebuilt between fall 2025 and summer 2026, a $52 million indoor recreation center is planned for later, and the $28.7 million Gateway Library at Eastmark, from the 2018 bond, was expected to open that fall.
Every one of those sites has a construction crew, and a few will hold grand openings with food. A 20ft refrigerated trailer on a job site holds the crew's lunches and ice for months, and the same unit can come back for a ribbon-cutting where a caterer needs cold storage that isn't a cooler in a car.

The Mesa Music Festival is free, and P.O.D. closes it out Saturday
Downtown Mesa's eighth Mesa Music Festival runs October 15 to 17, 2026, free to the public, with keynote talks at the Mesa Arts Center on Thursday and a main stage on Friday and Saturday. P.O.D. headlines Saturday night. Free events draw people who stay for dinner, and downtown restaurants plan their ordering around the crowd.
A street festival is a few blocks of closed road and a lot of hungry people, so vendors need cold storage close at hand. A 12ft refrigerated trailer tucked at the edge of the footprint holds drinks and food for every booth, and a dishwashing trailer keeps the plate-and-cup side of a sit-down vendor moving.
