Flash flooding left about four inches of water on Miami High School's floors and closed 4 miles of U.S. 60 on September 25, 2025

Thursday's storms on September 25, 2025 dropped 1 to 2.5 inches of rain from Miami to Claypool, and the National Weather Service reported flash flooding in homes, cars and buildings across Globe, Miami, Claypool, Central Heights-Midland City and Inspiration. About four inches of water covered the floors at Miami High School, classes were canceled the next day, and a 4-mile stretch of U.S. 60 near Miami closed for part of the afternoon.

A flooded school is also a flooded kitchen, and a flooded town has grocery coolers sitting in mud. In a storm like this one, cafeterias, stores and clinics often need temporary cold storage for a week or two while their own equipment is cleaned or replaced. A 20ft refrigerated trailer can be dropped in a dry parking lot, and a generator trailer runs it if the grid is down.

After federal help for the September 2025 floods was denied, Gila County faced $23.3 million in public infrastructure damage

On December 23, 2025, Gov. Katie Hobbs announced that FEMA had denied federal disaster relief for the September floods in the Globe-Miami area, saying the damage did not exceed state and local capacity. State estimates put homes at $4.1 million, with 187 households displaced, public infrastructure at $23.3 million, debris removal at $1.5 million, and sheltering and search and rescue at $4.7 million. Hobbs said she would appeal.

When federal money doesn't come, rebuilding is paid for by the people who live there, and that shifts how owners decide. A restaurant or store without a working cooler can't wait for a long process. Renting a portable refrigerated trailer by the month keeps the business open while repairs go on, and the rental calculator shows what that costs before anyone signs.

The state set aside $2.5 million for Miami's flood recovery while a $24 million sediment project ran seven days a week in Globe

A $24 million flood prevention project in Globe, paid through the federal Emergency Watershed Protection program, began construction the week before June 17, 2026, with sediment removal expected to finish in mid-July. The state budget included $10 million for flood recovery, split $5 million to Gila County and $2.5 million each to Miami and Globe. Globe's mayor said crews were working "seven days a week, 12 hours a day."

Twelve-hour days in June mean a lot of water, ice and cold lunches for the crews, and a work site on a creek bed has no restaurant nearby. A mobile kitchen trailer and a 12ft refrigerated trailer at the staging area feed a large crew without anyone leaving the job, and the equipment can move to the next phase when this one is done.

Miami reopened Hostetler Pool with a new slide and built a skate path at Bullion Plaza in late summer 2024

By August 23, 2024, Miami's Hostetler Pool had water again, with new tile, a water slide and a new deck, and the town aimed to reopen over Labor Day weekend. At the south end of Bullion Plaza, American Ramp was building a skate path, with crews working 10 hours a day, seven days a week ahead of a September 21 ribbon cutting. Resolution Copper was named as the partner on the skate path.

A reopened pool and a new skate path are the sort of projects that end in a party. Kids show up, parents bring chairs, and someone has to keep ice cream and drinks cold on a September afternoon in Bullion Plaza. A 12ft refrigerated trailer parked at the edge of the plaza does it without a fridge hookup, and a mobile kitchen trailer handles a cookout.

Miami and ADOT held a public meeting on January 7, 2026 about 3.6 miles of new trail to the Bullion Plaza Cultural Museum

The Town of Miami and ADOT held a virtual public meeting on January 7, 2026 at noon to present a trail system study. The recommendations cover about 3.6 miles of new trail, running from near the Miami Unified School District west to the Bullion Plaza Cultural Museum. People who couldn't attend were invited to comment online.

Trail work happens outdoors and often far from a restaurant, so crews on a project like this bring their own water and lunch. A 12ft refrigerated trailer and a generator trailer at the trailhead take care of that. When the path opens, the same setup suits a ribbon cutting or a community walk, with drinks cold at the finish line.

Miami bid out a roughly $490,000 rehabilitation of the Historic Keystone Stairs with Community Development Block Grant money

A bid listing for the Town of Miami's Historic Keystone Stairs Rehabilitation Project shows about $490,000 in work paid with Community Development Block Grant money through the Arizona Department of Housing. The scope covers concrete staircases and walkways, curb and gutter, and retaining walls, with a 45-day construction period. The listing's dates are inconsistent, so check the town for the exact schedule.

Concrete is picky about temperature and timing, and a crew hauling forms up a hillside staircase doesn't want to leave the site at noon. A contractor on a short job like this can park a 12ft refrigerated trailer at the bottom of the stairs for water, drinks and lunches. For a project on a 45-day clock, renting beats buying, and the rental calculator shows the short-term rate.

The Griffin Fire burned more than 60,000 acres in August 2020 and closed U.S. 60 for 67 miles through the Globe-Miami area

Lightning started two fires on August 17, 2020, and six days later they merged into the Griffin Fire in the Apache Mountains of the Tonto National Forest. By August 26 it had burned more than 60,056 acres and was 28% contained, with over 550 firefighters on the line. Gila County ordered evacuations east of U.S. 60, and the highway closed in both directions for 67 miles from Globe to the State Route 73 junction.

When the main road through the area is shut for 67 miles, deliveries stop and the stores along it run down their stock. A fire camp of 550 people adds a second demand for cold food and water. A portable refrigerated trailer at the staging area holds supplies for the crews, and a mobile kitchen trailer feeds them when the line stays busy past dark.

US 60 closed between Superior and Miami from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on September 10-12, 2024, with a detour of about 75 miles

For blasting on the bridge project, ADOT fully closed US 60 between Superior and Miami from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on September 10, 11 and 12, 2024. The detour ran about 75 miles on State Routes 177 and 77 through Winkelman and added roughly an hour to trips between the two towns.

Five hours is long enough to miss a produce delivery and short enough to be an annoyance rather than a crisis, which is why it's a good example of a planned disruption. A business that can see the closure coming can move cold stock into a portable refrigerated trailer the day before, so a late truck doesn't empty the shelves.

Floodwater closed U.S. 60 in both directions near milepost 247 for part of the day and cut off access to Cobre Valley Medical Center. A mobile home park was overwhelmed quickly, and firefighters went house to house. No injuries were reported.

A road closure that isolates a hospital also isolates its deliveries, and the clinics, pharmacies and kitchens that depend on cold supplies feel it too. Floodwater has cut this road before, so a backup plan is worth having. A generator trailer and a portable refrigerated trailer can be reserved ahead of monsoon season.

La Casita Cafe, a 79-year-old Globe restaurant, reopened eight days past its 40-day goal after the September 2025 flood

La Casita Cafe, a 79-year-old restaurant on Broad Street in Globe, was badly damaged in the September 2025 flood. People trapped inside were rescued with help from nearby businesses. The owners set a goal of reopening within 40 days and missed it by eight.

For a restaurant, forty days with no kitchen is forty days of payroll and no sales. The usual bottleneck is the walk-in cooler and the freezer, since replacement equipment takes weeks to arrive. A 20ft refrigerated trailer can stand in for the walk-in during a rebuild, so the cooks can prep before the permanent cooler is installed. Neighboring owners can plan for that gap before they need it.
