Storms and outages
A 90 mph microburst tore through Tempe on a Monday afternoon
At about 1 p.m. on October 13, 2025 a confirmed microburst with gusts of 90 mph hit Tempe, leaving damage from Guadalupe to Elliott roads and from Kyrene to Rural. Roofs came off, semi-trucks tipped over, trees fell on homes and cars, and more than 130 people were displaced. A temporary shelter opened at the Escalante center, and thousands of APS and SRP customers lost power.
The business side of it was just as rough: an auto shop was destroyed and roofs came off buildings at Baseline Industrial Center. When a storm like this knocks out a restaurant or grocery's cooler, there's no waiting for the roof. A refrigerated trailer with a generator trailer in the parking lot protects inventory while the building is assessed.
Storms and outages
One year after the microburst, Tempe has cleared 2,000 tons of debris and replanted 400 trees
A year after the October 2025 microburst, Tempe says most of its physical recovery is done or close to it. About 1,000 homes and about 70 businesses were damaged, more than 700 trees came down, and the city has hauled away more than 2,000 tons of debris and replanted over 400 trees. Over $1 million in SBA funding reached residents and the city, and the emergency operations plan has been updated.
The updated plan is the part worth copying. Restaurants, markets and caterers in the area now have a real example of what a 90 mph storm does to a block, and some will plan for it. A 20ft refrigerated trailer on a standing agreement is a simple way for a food business to have emergency cold storage ready before the next one.

Storms and outages
Seven months after the storm, blue tarps still covered Mill Avenue roofs
In May 2026 Mill Avenue and the industrial pockets around Baseline still had blue tarps on rooftops, limbs along the curbs and cleanup crews on the street. Business owners said insurance gaps and permitting delays were the biggest obstacles, and some were deciding between a quick patch and a full rebuild. Part of one damaged industrial center near Kyrene and Baseline roads was slated for demolition.
A business that can't reopen for months still has product, staff and customers waiting. Some food businesses in that position set up a refrigerated container on the lot so inventory doesn't spoil while the permit is pending, and a mobile kitchen trailer lets a kitchen keep serving from the parking lot.
Storms and outages
SRP and Tempe are swapping 37 trees for 114 so the next storm hurts less
In March 2026, SRP and the City of Tempe began removing 37 trees growing too close to power lines and planting 114 new ones, 18 of them at the Tempe Public Library. It's part of SRP's Right Tree, Right Place program, which has removed over 1,400 trees and planted 4,650 since 2018. The October microbursts destroyed more than 500 trees on city property alone.
Trees and power lines are only one half of storm planning. Anything on a restaurant or store's power, from a walk-in to a freezer case, is still at risk for the hours it takes to fix a line. A 12ft refrigerated trailer is a small, quick way to keep inventory cold in a lot with a generator beside it.

Fires
U.S. Egg's Baseline Road restaurant was closed more than a year after a water heater fire
A fire that started around the hot water heater in October 2024 severely damaged U.S. Egg at 131 E. Baseline Road in Tempe, with water and smoke damage on top of the fire. Nobody was hurt, and all 36 employees moved to the company's five other Valley locations. The restaurant was closed for more than a year, and it reopened in time for a February 2026 report.
A breakfast restaurant with other locations can do what U.S. Egg did: move its people. Its inventory has to go somewhere too. A refrigerated trailer rental at a sister location gives a place to put dairy and eggs during the rebuild, and a mobile kitchen trailer can keep a catering schedule alive in the meantime.
Fires
Doc and Eddy's had no sprinklers, and five fire departments came to Rural and Baseline
A fire at Doc and Eddy's, the sports bar near Rural and Baseline roads known for karaoke and team trivia, did extensive damage early on Sunday, March 17, 2019. Three employees escaped, officials thought the building might be a total loss, and they noted it had no sprinkler system, which would have cut the damage significantly. Crews from Guadalupe, Chandler, Mesa, Phoenix and Gilbert helped Tempe firefighters.
A neighborhood bar with a full kitchen has kegs, mixers and a walk-in of food that go the same day. When a place like this closes in a hurry, the owner can park a refrigerated trailer out back for what's left, and a 20ft refrigerated trailer has room for all of it, kegs included.

Tempe Diablo Stadium drew 96,211 for 15 Angels games in 2026

Each of those fans bought something to eat. A ballpark's permanent coolers can't stretch to cover a sellout in March, and vendors are better off with a plan for the busy dates. A portable refrigerated trailer behind the concourse holds extra beer and food, and a generator trailer keeps it running where there's no outlet.
Large events
The Tempe Festival of the Arts has drawn up to 225,000 people to Mill Avenue
The Tempe Festival of the Arts, free and pedestrian-only along Mill Avenue from 3rd Street to University Avenue, brought more than 300 artists and up to 225,000 visitors to downtown for its 48th annual run in 2016. There were food trucks and two added beer and wine gardens.
Food trucks and beer gardens go through a lot of product in a weekend, and Mill Avenue doesn't have much room to store it. A 12ft refrigerated trailer parked on a closed side street gives vendors one cold place to restock, and a dishwashing trailer keeps a beer garden's glassware turning over.

ASU is building a $187 million library and rebuilding Bateman Hall on the Tempe campus
ASU's 2026 construction list for the Tempe campus includes the $187 million, 80,000-square-foot John S. McCain III Library and Museum, a $115 million modernization of the Bateman Physical Sciences Center's H-wing, and a new residence complex with about 800 beds by fall 2028. At the Desert Financial Arena, a $100 million, three-year renovation runs to December 2029.
A campus where several jobs run for two to three years at once keeps a lot of crews fed and watered. Contractors on a site like that can set up a refrigerated container for ice, drinks and lunches, and a mobile kitchen trailer can serve hot meals on site during the long summer stretches.
Storms and outages
The August 2025 haboob dropped trees on cars in Tempe and flooded part of Sky Harbor
The haboob that crossed the Valley on August 25, 2025 was the largest of the year. In Tempe a tree fell on a white van near Hardy Road, tens of thousands of homes and businesses lost power across the metro area, and storm damage reached a Sky Harbor terminal, where crews were cleaning up water that came into passenger areas.
A haboob that grounds flights and drops trees on streets makes the next day's deliveries uncertain for any restaurant or market. A refrigerated trailer already on site gives a business somewhere to hold what it has, and a generator trailer keeps it cold through the outage.
