Construction
Douglas broke ground on a $328 million commercial port of entry with 36 truck bays on September 5, 2025
On September 5, 2025, with Mayor Jose Grijalva and Sen. Mark Kelly, Douglas broke ground on a new commercial port of entry on 80 acres, 4.5 miles west of the Raul Hector Castro port where commercial inspections happen now. The $328 million facility will have 36 covered truck bays, compared with five at Castro, and non-intrusive inspection technology, with construction running through fall 2028. The mayor said the community had waited close to 30 years.
A new commercial port means a new corridor for produce, meat and consumer goods, and an inspection bay is a cold-chain pinch point. A broker or importer can stage a 20ft refrigerated trailer or a portable refrigerated trailer nearby for product waiting on inspection, and construction crews can eat from a mobile kitchen trailer on the site.

The Douglas port of entry reopened to Mexican cattle on August 24, 2026 after more than a year
The Douglas Port of Entry opened Monday, August 24, 2026 for cattle crossing from Mexico for the first time in more than a year, after a closure tied to screwworm. Local coverage did not give head counts or economic figures.
Border cattle and border produce share a calendar: when a port reopens, the traffic returns in a rush, and the supporting businesses scramble. A ranch supplier, feed store or meat processor planning for a surge can use a refrigerated trailer for flexible capacity, and a refrigerated container as a storage option while the week's volume sorts itself out.

Storms and outages
An 80 mph microburst north of Douglas downed more than 70 power poles on July 19, 2022
On the evening of July 19, 2022, a microburst with gusts as strong as 80 mph hit north of Douglas, according to the National Weather Service. Strong winds brought down more than 70 power poles, and about 331 customers lost power. Arizona Public Service expected restoration by Friday morning, and the Douglas Visitor Center ran a cooling station Wednesday through Friday from 2:30 to 7 p.m.
Three days on a pole repair is a long time for a freezer in July. A market, restaurant or clinic that knows it's in a monsoon zone can book a generator trailer and a 12ft refrigerated trailer before the season, so the first night of an outage doesn't decide a week's inventory.
Storms and outages
A late-night storm on August 5, 2026 broke windows, sparked a transformer and downed power lines in Douglas
Severe storms swept southern Arizona late on Wednesday, August 5, 2026. In Douglas, the storm broke windows, toppled trash bins, set off a transformer and brought down multiple power lines. Over in Bisbee, floodwaters flooded the underpass at the traffic circle and an hour of hail left streets covered in ice, mud and rock, and deputies also reported a brief tornado warning east of Sierra Vista.
A storm that sparks a transformer at night leaves business owners to find out in the morning how much product was lost. A restaurant or store that had already lined up an emergency refrigerated trailer and a generator trailer can have it on the lot by noon, rather than hunting for ice.

Bisbee is about 23 miles west of Douglas.
Bisbee: The August 5, 2026 storm hit the Copper Queen Hotel hardest. The Cochise County Fair's 100th year in Douglas brought a record-pace crowd and a Power Wheels demolition derby
The Cochise County Fair marked its 100th year in Douglas with five days of events from Wednesday, September 25 to Sunday, September 29. Preliminary numbers pointed to another record attendance year, and the fair association's president said the Friday and Saturday crowds were the largest in years. The lineup included a catch-a-chicken event, a greased pig contest, mutton busting, steer and calf riding and a Power Wheels demolition derby.
Five days of fairgrounds crowds mean vendors who can't leave their stands and a lot of food to hold between the morning and the evening rush. A vendor group can share a 20ft refrigerated trailer behind the midway, and the fair association can bring in a generator trailer when the load on the grid runs past the stands' capacity.

The fair association's stated goal is to highlight the county's heritage, economy and residents' achievements.
A late-night fair in a border town in September is still warm, and the food and drink vendors are working until midnight. They can keep product in a 12ft refrigerated trailer at the edge of the midway, and a mobile kitchen trailer handles the overflow from the stands without bringing more generators into the crowd.

Douglas held its first mariachi festival in front of the Gadsden Hotel on May 9, 2026
Douglas held its first-ever mariachi festival on Saturday, May 9, 2026, from 2:30 to 7:30 p.m. in front of the Gadsden Hotel in downtown Douglas, with streets blocked off for folklorico dancers and mariachi bands. It was free, and food sales benefited the Boys and Girls Club of Douglas and the Mark Danell public safety scholarship.
A first-time street festival tends to draw more people than anyone planned, and a fundraiser for a scholarship needs enough food to match. The organizers can set up a 12ft refrigerated trailer behind the booths to hold the day's supply, and a mobile kitchen trailer to cook, so the downtown block doesn't depend on the hotel's kitchen.
Storms and outages
Davis Road closed to flash flooding in Douglas while a July 2018 storm blew a mobile home over
A storm on Monday, July 30, 2018 closed Davis Road in Douglas between Highway 80 and Highway 191 because of flash flooding. High winds blew over a mobile home, injuring a 32-year-old woman inside, and power lines came down near Frontier and Double Adobe roads.
A closed road and a downed line together mean a delivery that doesn't arrive and a cooler that doesn't run. A store or restaurant on the edge of town can keep a portable refrigerated trailer arranged for monsoon season, and a generator trailer to cover the hours when the line crews haven't gotten there yet.

A June 2015 thunderstorm ripped most of the roof off a package store on Douglas' north end
A severe thunderstorm hit Douglas' north end around 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 17, 2015. Debris covered North Peterson and North Madison avenues and West Walker and West Ward streets, fallen trees stopped traffic, and about 200 residents lost power. The Spirits package store at Peterson and Walker took the worst of it, with most of its roof torn from the building.
A store with its roof off has a problem that's bigger than the roof: product, shelves, refrigeration all exposed. A retailer in that spot can bring a 12ft refrigerated trailer or refrigerated container to save what's cold, and a generator trailer to run it while the building is secured.

Douglas weighed a bid from Wild West Supermarket to reopen the former Food City on San Antonio Avenue
Douglas' mayor announced on Facebook that the city had received a bid from a grocery company for the old Food City building at 1300 San Antonio Avenue. The Arizona Corporations Commission lists the owner as Carniceria Wild West LLC in Tucson, and the bid is for Wild West Supermarket & Restaurant. The council called a special meeting with an executive session to review the bid and lease.
Reopening a vacant supermarket means walk-ins to inspect, cases to start up and shelves that can't be stocked until the cold side works. An operator can hold the first deliveries in a refrigerated container or a 20ft refrigerated trailer during the remodel, then keep a portable refrigerated trailer option on call for the first summer.
