The Sahuarita Pecan Festival, which usually drew about 20,000 people, was canceled in 2019 over tariffs
Farmers Investment Co. announced on August 16, 2019 that it was canceling the Sahuarita Pecan Festival, which would have been its 11th and usually draws about 20,000 people to the farm on Sahuarita Road. The company's CEO said pecan tariffs with China had risen from about 7% to 47% and that it needed to focus on its core business.
A festival built around a harvest is a cold-storage story at its core: pecans, pies, ciders and baked goods need to be held and sold over a weekend crowd. A farm event on this scale runs vendors out of tents and trailers, and a refrigerated trailer beside the booths holds stock for the day, while a mobile kitchen can cook for a festival lawn.

Sahuarita's first hospital, 77,000 square feet with 18 beds, broke ground in April 2019 and opened in November 2020
Northwest Healthcare broke ground on a 77,000-square-foot, 18-bed hospital in Sahuarita Town Center on April 16, 2019, with room to expand later. It opened on November 11, 2020 as the town's first hospital, able to admit patients at a med-surge level.
A hospital build takes more than a year of crews, and once it's open the kitchen, pharmacy and lab all need dependable cold storage. During a build, a refrigerated container in the yard holds crew meals and drinks. In a hospital, a generator trailer and a refrigerated trailer are options if a freezer fails or a power feed is down.

Santa Rita Fire District took over fire service in northern Sahuarita on July 1, 2024, with five stations
Since July 1, 2024, the Santa Rita Fire District, formerly Green Valley Fire, has covered northern Sahuarita, including Rancho Sahuarita, with five stations. Rural Metro subscriptions ended that day, and fire protection is now funded through property taxes. The district is also working with Sahuarita Unified School District on safety talks and station tours, and runs Fire Corps programs.
A change in the fire district is also a change in who runs the open houses, school events and fundraisers that go with it. A district or a PTA planning a station open house or a fundraiser can use a mobile kitchen trailer and a 12ft refrigerated trailer to feed a crowd on an apron without a full kitchen.
Fires
Santa Rita Fire District refit its wildland gear and retrained all 55 firefighters ahead of the 2025 fire season
In April 2025, the Santa Rita Fire District said heat, rising winds and little winter moisture resembled 2004, a year with a long, intense fire season. After a six-acre brush fire in Vail was quickly contained, crews refit wildland gear and all 55 firefighters took a refresher course. The district also urged homeowners and HOAs to become Firewise certified, and eight local HOAs already were.
Long fire seasons mean long shifts, rehab areas and staging camps, and mutual aid along the I-19 corridor as far south as Nogales. A mobile kitchen can feed a crew at a staging area, and a refrigerated trailer holds the food and water so supplies aren't running out in the heat.

The Monument Fire forced more than 10,000 people out of the area southeast of Sierra Vista in June 2011
Sierra Vista is about 46 miles southeast of Sahuarita.

A Scottsdale developer filed to build a 17.3-acre commercial center at Rancho Resort Boulevard and Sahuarita Road
In November 2025, SimonCRE of Scottsdale filed a pre-application with the Town of Sahuarita for a commercial center on about 17.3 acres at the northeast corner of South Rancho Resort Boulevard and Sahuarita Road. The developer is talking with Rancho Sahuarita about the project, which would target a possible anchor store such as a Target and attract bigger national brands.
A new retail center puts restaurants, grocers and quick-service brands into the same new pad sites, and they rarely finish on the same day. An operator opening first can use a refrigerated trailer for cold storage and a mobile kitchen for prep while the building is finished, and a dishwashing trailer covers the sink line.
Storms and outages
High winds knocked down poles near Sahuarita and Green Valley in July 2021, leaving more than 2,500 without power
Strong storms on Thursday night, July 22, 2021 knocked down poles near Sahuarita and Green Valley, and more than 2,500 people lost power. TEP's outage map showed 1,298 of them near Rancho Sahuarita and the rest along I-19 where it meets Nogales Highway and Duval Mine Road, with restoration for some customers estimated at 12:16 a.m. Friday.
A late-night outage in July is a hard time to be a store with refrigerated stock. For a grocer, restaurant or care home, a generator trailer and a 12ft refrigerated trailer can be in place before the storm line arrives, so the loss window is a few hours instead of a spoiled shift of product.

Storms and outages
Sahuarita lost power twice in two months in 2023, including 4,000 customers overnight in September
On July 19, 2023, about 1,405 TEP customers in Sahuarita lost power during a severe thunderstorm and dust storm advisory, with service back by 6:30 p.m. Then overnight on September 11 into September 12, more than 4,000 customers lost power, mainly around Sahuarita Road and Nogales Highway. Power was back in Sahuarita by 8:52 a.m., with no cause reported.
Outages that last overnight are the kind that take a freezer down. Rather than gamble on the next one being short, a business or a care facility can set up a generator trailer and a refrigerated trailer as a standing backup in the heat of the season.
Construction
Sahuarita won a $3 million federal grant in 2017 for its Advanced Manufacturing and Technology Center
In July 2017, the Town of Sahuarita received a $3 million grant from the U.S. Department of Commerce's Economic Development Administration to fund the Sahuarita Advanced Manufacturing and Technology Center, called SAMTEC. It is planned as a multi-tenant facility with flexible high-tech space for local businesses.
Manufacturers and food producers that move into new multi-tenant space often need temporary cold storage while their lines are being set up. A 20ft refrigerated trailer at the dock lets a tenant store product before a permanent cooler is installed, and a refrigerated container works for a longer commitment.

In March 2019, TEP crews blamed weather-related equipment damage for an outage that left thousands of residents in Oro Valley and the Catalina area without power. Fires
Four fire agencies fought a blaze that burned a mobile home and ten cars on West Pinto Road
A fire in the 7,000 block of West Pinto Road in Sahuarita on a Monday in July 2025 engulfed a mobile home and ten nearby vehicles. Helmet Peak, Santa Rita, Drexel Heights and Tohono O'odham fire crews responded shortly after 5 p.m. and worked to protect nearby structures and stayed to make sure it was out. All occupants were safe and the cause was under investigation.
A fire that pulls four agencies is a long afternoon for firefighters in July. Neighbors and responders often need cold water and food, and a refrigerated trailer holds supplies for a rehab area while a mobile kitchen feeds crews who are out for hours. For a household or business that lost a building, either can run on a driveway with a generator trailer.
Storms and outages
Pima County closed Sahuarita Road between Wilmot and Country Club roads for flooding in June 2026
On June 17, 2026, Pima County closed Sahuarita Road between Country Club Road and Wilmot Road because of flooding, and also closed Alvernon Way south of Sahuarita Road. An update at 6:50 p.m. said the roadway had reopened.
A closure that lasts a few hours can still strand a delivery truck, and a flash flood can cut a store off from its suppliers for longer if more rain follows. A grocer, restaurant or feed store can keep a 20ft refrigerated trailer on call as overflow cold storage when a delivery can't get through, and a generator trailer covers it if the power drops in the same storm.
