Fires
A fire on the evening of February 14, 2024 destroyed two historic buildings on Bisbee's Main Street
The fire broke out around 9:30 p.m. on Wednesday, February 14, 2024, and crews spent most of Thursday containing it. It started at 30 Main Street, the home of Bisbee Oil and Vinegar, and destroyed two historic buildings. The owner tried an extinguisher, then he and his wife escaped through the neighboring roof. Fire Chief Jim Richardson said the firewall held well, and Main Street closed for the foreseeable future.
When a downtown core shuts down in the middle of a holiday weekend, the businesses on the other side of the tape still need to eat, stock and serve. Shop owners around a closure need temporary storage for perishables and a way to keep serving. A portable refrigerated trailer parked a block away and a mobile kitchen trailer at the edge of the closure are ways to keep a restaurant row alive.
Fires
After the February 2024 Main Street fire, Bisbee lodgings evacuated and local hosts took in displaced guests
After the Valentine's Day fire in 2024, lodgings such as the Letson Loft evacuated, and some local hosts took in displaced guests. Le Cornucopia Café had been closed when the fire started, and its co-owner worried about the holiday weekend and told visitors that Bisbee remained open. Many businesses reopened the next day, though Commerce Street and Main Street stayed closed, with jersey barriers planned to create safe pedestrian walkways.
Downtown Bisbee runs on small restaurants, galleries and inns. The kitchens are small too, and a power or access problem at one building ripples through the whole row. Having a 12ft refrigerated trailer available to move a week's perishables out of a restricted block is a practical backup plan for a café, and a mobile kitchen trailer lets a displaced restaurant keep serving.

Renovation
By March 20, 2024 Bisbee had decided its burned Main Street buildings could not be saved and began taking down the walls
Five weeks after the fire, Mayor Ken Budge and Fire Chief Jim Richardson reported that architects and brick masons had concluded the burned buildings could not be braced and would need to be rebuilt. Crews would cut the walls down to roughly the bottom of the second-floor windows to remove the risk of falling bricks, and all the bricks were being saved to use later as a facade on a new structural wall. First-floor businesses had water damage and could not reopen until the upper floors were rebuilt.
Rebuilds like this run on a slower clock than normal construction, and neighboring businesses have to wait. A restaurant or gallery that can't reopen yet can store product in a portable refrigerated trailer until it can, and the construction crews can eat from a mobile kitchen trailer parked near the fence.
Renovation
Bisbee's Main Street partially reopened in April 2024, with a town of about 5,000 relying on 80,000 to 100,000 visitors a year
By April 5, 2024, Main Street in Bisbee was partially open, with the eastbound lane open to cars and the sidewalk reopened to pedestrians. The Letson Loft Hotel, Many Fine Things and Bisbee Oil & Vinegar stayed closed, and Oil & Vinegar was operating out of the city convention center. Killer Bee Honey closed for about three and a half weeks. The tourism director estimated 80,000 to 100,000 visitors a year in a town of about 5,000.
A shop that loses its storefront for a month can survive on online orders, but a restaurant or tasting room can't. Businesses that have to move operations to a temporary home, as Oil & Vinegar did, need cold and dry storage where they land. A 20ft refrigerated container works as a fixed pop-up pantry, and a portable refrigerated trailer is easy to set up in a lot.

The 48-room Copper Queen Hotel was listed at $12.5 million in April 2024, with Cafe Roka also for sale
In April 2024, the Copper Queen Hotel in Bisbee was listed for $12.5 million, with Cafe Roka, a Main Street restaurant dating to 1992, also for sale. The hotel has 48 rooms, a restaurant and a bar, and was built in 1902. ABC15 said it survived the 1908 fire and the 1974 closing of the copper mine, and called it the oldest continuously running hotel in Arizona.
Historic hotels and restaurants change owners often, and each new owner brings a list of upgrades. A kitchen refit in a building from 1902 isn't quick, and the restaurant either closes or finds a way to serve while the work goes on. A portable refrigerated trailer and a mobile kitchen trailer let a hotel keep its breakfast and banquet service running while the walk-in and the line are replaced.

Bisbee's Great Stair Climb, a 4.5-mile course with more than 1,000 stairs, reached its 34th year in 2024
The Great Stair Climb Bisbee 1000 was in its 34th year in 2024. The 4.5-mile foot race or walk through town crosses nine staircases and more than 1,000 stairs, ending at Higgins Hill Park. The first race in 1990 drew about 200 climbers, and more than 2,000 had registered by the 20th event in 2010. Bisbee has more than 82 staircases, and the event is staged by the nonprofit Bisbee Vogue, Inc.
A race that sends a thousand people up and down a hillside needs cold water at every turn and food at the end. The finish at Higgins Hill Park and the staircases in the old town are not places where a truck easily goes. Organizers can set a portable refrigerated trailer at a loading point for water, fruit and recovery food, and a 12ft refrigerated trailer fits the narrow streets better than a larger unit.

Bisbee's Fourth of July coaster races returned in 2023 after a year off, running from Tombstone Canyon to Main Street
Bisbee's Fourth of July coaster races date to 1914 and returned in 2023 after being canceled in 2022 because of department shortages. Junior drivers aged 9 to 12 and senior drivers aged 13 to 16 compete, with about 15 to 25 in each division. The course runs from Tombstone Canyon at Highway 80 to the bottom of Main Street, and the sidewalks are often packed with thousands of spectators.
A holiday that packs a narrow canyon street means a lot of people looking for food and cold drinks in a small area. Restaurants and bars along the route stock heavily for the Fourth. A portable refrigerated trailer parked at the edge of town gives a business extra holding space for the day, and a generator trailer is a good insurance policy if the holiday load pushes the neighborhood circuits.
Storms and outages
Bisbee was hit by about an hour of hail and floodwater on the night of August 5, 2026
Severe storms hit southern Arizona late on Wednesday, August 5, 2026. One Bisbee resident described intense hail for a good hour, floodwater ran through the streets, and the Cochise County Sheriff's Office said the underpass at the Bisbee traffic circle flooded. City crews and residents dug through rock and mud until nearly 2 a.m., resumed about three hours later, and by noon on Thursday had cleared debris piles along Review Alley.
Bisbee is built on steep slopes, so a hard rain turns the street into a flood channel and shuts the roads that bring in supplies. A restaurant, grocery or hotel that has a 12ft refrigerated trailer available can protect product if the cooler floods, and a generator trailer keeps the kitchen going if the transformer on the hill gets hit.

Storms and outages
Hail and runoff flooded the Copper Queen Hotel lobby and tore the cover off its pool in August 2026
The August 5, 2026 storm hit the Copper Queen Hotel hardest. Steep roads such as Brewery Avenue became rushing rivers carrying mud, rocks and ice into the historic business district, and ice clogged the hotel's roof drains and flooded the lobby. The storm tore the cover off the pool, and hail broke fourth-floor bathroom windows. Staff and guests pushed water out of the lobby, and Cochise County offered free sandbag drop-off sites.
A hotel that takes in water and glass damage in a single night still has guests, breakfast and a restaurant to run. The kitchen can usually keep working while the lobby is repaired, but only if the food stays cold and the service stays on. A portable refrigerated trailer set up outside holds the inventory, and a mobile kitchen trailer can serve breakfast while the main kitchen waits on an inspection.
Fires
Investigators suspected an electrical cause for Bisbee's February 2024 Main Street fire, but classified it as undetermined
In May 2024, fire investigators released an origin and cause report on the February Main Street fire in Bisbee. The official classification was undetermined, but investigators suspected an electrical cause, and the building collapse limited their access to the structure. The building where the fire started dated to the early 1900s, and engineers concluded the original structures could not be saved, so they were being dismantled brick by brick for reconstruction.
Old buildings carry old wiring, and the risk is not only to the building but to the businesses inside it. An owner who plans a rewiring or kitchen upgrade can take the opportunity to move perishable stock out of the way, using a portable refrigerated trailer during the work, and a generator trailer lets the shop run lights and coolers while the electrician is in the walls.
